If you've gone self-employed or set up a company, you'll keep hearing about your 'UTR.' Here's what it is and how to get one.
What is a UTR number?
A UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference) is a 10-digit number HMRC uses to identify you or your company for tax. You need it to file a self assessment tax return, and companies need one for corporation tax.
How do I get one?
You don't apply for a UTR directly — you get one automatically when you register for self assessment (as an individual) or when you register a limited company. HMRC then sends your UTR by post, usually within about 10 working days.
Where do I find my UTR?
- On the letter HMRC sent when you registered.
- On previous self assessment tax returns or statements.
- In your HMRC online account / the HMRC app.
Lost it?
If you can't find your UTR, you can recover it through your HMRC online account or by contacting HMRC. If all this feels like a maze, we can handle your registrations and dealing with HMRC for you.
